Things You'll Need

  • Latex paints

  • Standard paint roller

  • Paint roller frame

  • Stippling paint roller

Tip

If you want to add multiple colors to your speckled paint look, wait for each color to dry before you begin to apply the next. This will prevent the paint from mixing together and creating a muddy shade.

You might think that creating a speckled paint look involves special textured paints or a long session of careful splatter painting but this finish is actually easy to create thanks to a special type of paint roller. You can find all of the tools you need for this project at most home improvement stores. While it will take a little extra effort to create your speckled effect, the time required isn't much longer than that of applying an additional coat of paint to your walls.

Step 1

Paint the wall or object with a solid base coat of latex paint and a standard paint roller. This creates the background of your speckled paint look.

Step 2

Wait for the base coat to dry completely before you continue.

Step 3

Attach a stippling paint roller to your paint roller frame. These paint rollers are often made of foam and feature tiny nubs covering the surface of the roller. While the paint rollers look different, they will fit on standard paint roller frames.

Step 4

Dip a paintbrush into a can of latex paint in the desired color of your speckles and use the paintbrush to apply a thin coat of paint to the stippling paint roller. If you saturate the paint roller with paint, you will end up with smears on your wall instead of speckles.

Step 5

Roll the stippling paint brush lightly across the surface to leave behind little speckles. You can add more speckling by rolling it over the surface several times until you are satisfied with the results.
