How to Use Essential Oils to Freshen Carpets

Pure essential oils have many uses including cleaning and freshening the home. It is important to deodorize carpets as they absorb smells from pets, bacteria from shoes, rain water and snow, and more. The combination of essential oils and baking soda is an effective carpet cleaner. Oils such as lemon, lavender, and tea tree have antiseptic, disinfectant and cleansing properties that make them ideal for killing bacteria and odors lingering in your carpet, plus they make the home smell fresh and clean. Baking soda is an effective carpet cleaner as it absorbs odors.

Step 1

Pour one 16-ounce box of baking soda into a mixing bowl. Add 20 drops of lavender essential oil and 10 drops each of lemon and tea tree essential oil to the bowl. Mix well.

Step 2

Sprinkle mixture on areas of carpet that need deodorizing and allow to sit for 10 to 20 minutes.

Step 3

Vacuum mixture. Save any unused mixture in a glass jar for later use.
