Keep carpet clean with some simple ingredients.

At-home carpet cleaners are helpful, but what if you only need to spot clean or don't need to clean your carpets often? Buying or renting a machine can be expensive. Fortunately, some simple solutions only require cheap ingredients and a little elbow grease.

Step 1

Mix equal parts of vinegar and water in a spray bottle and spray over the area you need to clean. Allow to sit for 10 minutes and then scrub with a wet towel.

Step 2

Lightly spray club soda without soaking the carpet. Let it sit for 10 minutes and then blot dry with towels.

Step 3

Mix equal parts salt, borax and vinegar. Rub the paste into the stain and allow to dry. Once dry, vacuum.

Step 4

Use water and small amount of dish soap for small spills and stains. Scrub in and rinse with water. Blot dry.

Step 5

Sprinkle baking soda or cornstarch on the carpet to clean and deodorize without water. Let sit for five minutes and then vacuum.
