Slicing a bagel seems like it should be a simple procedure but, according to George Washington Hospital, cuts resulting from the task are a vastly under-reported injury. If you follow the proper technique, however, you can quickly and cleanly halve a bagel with no risk to your hands -- no matter how sharp the knife.
Place the bagel flat on a counter surface with your hand on top.
Slice halfway through the center of the bagel with a serrated knife, cutting horizontally and keeping fingers away from the blade.
Stand the bagel up with the slice facing upward. Hold this end closed with your fingers.
Continue slicing downward until the bagel is halved.
