  • Eye protection

Ceramic is a very hard material, and you need special tools to grind it properly. A ceramic grinder uses a metal (aluminum oxide or similar) grinding wheel. This is a wheel that has sharp metal flakes of aluminum oxide glued to the surface much like sandpaper. It will grind down a ceramic tile or object with precision.

Step 1

Put on your eye protection and gloves.

Step 2

Insert a ceramic grinding disc into a grinder by placing it on the grinding chuck and then tightening the chuck.

Step 3

Place the ceramic piece into a large D-vise, which allows plenty of room to grind the area that needs to be reshaped.

Step 4

Turn on your grinding machine and apply it to the ceramic. Make short passes at the area that needs reshaping, removing small amounts of material with each pass. Check the ceramic frequently to track your progress and get a feel for how much material is being removed.

Step 5

Stop every few minutes to let the grinding disc cool. If it feels like it is getting too hot, stop instantly and let the grinding disc cool for several minutes. Use a small stone and tap the side of the disc to remove built up chaff from the ceramic piece. Then continue to grind and reshape as needed.
