Recycling is a good way to make something new from something you no longer use for its original purpose. For example, you can take an old bookshelf and turn it into a brand new bed frame. You can take the bookshelf and attach it to a Hollywood frame to make a headboard and foot board for your bed. Using the bookshelf, you give yourself some extra storage space for books, lamps and even extra blankets.
Measure your twin bed. The standard size for a twin is about 39 inches wide and 75 inches long. Use this measurement as a guide for which bookshelves to use.
Cut your bookshelf with a saw, if you have a tall bookshelf. Cut the shelf two-thirds of the way down from the top. Use the two-thirds portion for the headboard and the one-third portion for the foot board.
Sand the cut edges of the bookshelf to protect your floor from scratching. Protect your floor even more and cut out pieces of felt in the shape of the bottom edges of the bookshelf and hot gluing them on.
Place the headboard portion at the top of the Hollywood frame with the shelves facing the foot of the bed. Line up the shelf with the frame and use a pencil to mark where the screws should go through the shelf and into the frame.
Drill some 4-inch screws through the headboard into the Hollywood frame to secure it in place. Attach the screws so the points end up under the bed, not sticking out.
Set up the one-third portion of the bookshelf at the foot of the bed so the shelves face away from the bed. Line up the shelves with the holes in the Hollywood frame and attach using the 4-inch screws.
Place the box spring and mattress on top of the frame and slide the bed in its proper place.
