How to Replace the Agitator Dog in a Kenmore Washer

Kenmore direct-drive washers use agitator dogs and a motor coupling instead of a belt to spin and agitate the wash tub. The agitator dogs are within the agitator itself. Replace the agitator dogs yourself and save money on an expensive service bill. Agitator dogs are available at appliance repair centers.

Replace your Kenmore agitator dogs yourself and save money.

Step 1

Disconnect the washer power cord from the wall outlet and open the washer lid.

Step 2

Pull the cap off the top of the agitator. If the cap is difficult to pop off, use a flat-head screwdriver to pry the cap off the agitator. Look inside the agitator and find the small plastic handle to the inner cap. Grab the handle with your hand and twist the cap back and forth while pulling the cap up through the agitator.

Step 3

Place a socket over the bolt in the center of the agitator that secures the agitator to the spline shaft. Turn the bolt counterclockwise with the socket wrench and remove the bolt.

Step 4

Grab the bottom of the agitator with both hands and pull the agitator off the shaft and out of the washer. Place the agitator on the floor and put your feet over the bottom edges of the agitator.

Step 5

Twist the top of the agitator counterclockwise with your hands and pull up to separate the top of the agitator from the bottom. Look under the top of the agitator for the agitator dogs and cam. The cam or dogs may be in the top of the bottom portion as well. The dogs resemble elongated teardrops and fit into a round nylon cam.

Step 6

Assemble the new agitator dogs into the new cam. Insert the agitator dog assembly into the bottom of the top agitator. Place the top of the agitator over the bottom and twist clockwise to lock the two pieces together.

Step 7

Place the agitator over the shaft in the washer tub and push down until the agitator seats to the bottom of the tub. Place the mounting bolt back in the center of the agitator and tighten the bolt with the socket wrench.

Step 8

Spread a small film of dishwashing liquid around the O-ring on the outside of the inner cap with your finger. This will make inserting the cap smoother. Insert the cap into the agitator with the handle pointing toward you. Place the top cap over the top of the agitator and press down until it locks in place.

Step 9

Close the washer lid and plug the power cord into the wall outlet.
