Taking care of a garden involves keeping an eye out for potential outbreaks of weeds among the plants. Getting rid of the weeds involves knowing what substances are able to kill them effectively. Many people choose to use organic homemade weed killers instead of chemical products. Vinegar is one substance that often is utilized in the battle against weeds, cropping up in several different homemade herbicide recipes.
One way to use vinegar as a weed killer is to simply use it straight from the bottle. Put vinegar into a spray bottle, and spray it directly on the weeds. It may take some time for the vinegar to work. If there is no change in the weeds after a few days, spray them with vinegar again. Repeat until the weeds die off. It helps to find a concentrated vinegar solution that is around 20 percent rather than the standard 5 percent.
Another recipe for a vinegar weed killer involves mixing vinegar with lemon juice concentrate. Take 1 quart of white or apple cider vinegar and add in 4 oz. of lemon juice concentrate. Mix the two thoroughly, then put the mixture into a spray bottle. Spray the weeds; doing so in the middle of the day when the sun is hot is best. Make sure you do not accidentally spray the plants you wish to keep alive.
A mixture of vinegar and salt is good for killing weeds as well. Combine 4 cups of white vinegar with ¼ cup of salt. Add in 2 tsp. of dish soap and mix it well. The dish soap acts as a means to help the solution stick to the weeds. Put the solution in a spray bottle, and then spray the weeds. Avoid spritzing healthy plants. For best effect, use the spray while the sun is shining. This method is best for weeds growing in sidewalk cracks or patches of weeds in the grass.
Combine vinegar and sugar in order to make an effective herbicide. Use 4 cups of vinegar, ¼ cup of sugar and 2 teaspoons of dish soap. Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and spray on the weeds. This mixture works best on weed trees, bushes and vines.
