Coats made from wool are usually heavy, durable and last for years with proper care. Wool coats typically require laundering by a dry cleaner. Improper washing can shrink and deform your wool coat. However, if your coat has a low percentage of wool, you may be able to machine wash it yourself. Remember that laundering a wool coat in a washing machine may ruin it. To keep the wool coat safe, consider dry cleaning the coat instead.
Set your washing machine to the gentle cycle with a lukewarm water temperature. Let the washer drum begin to fill with water. Add 1/4 cup laundry detergent designed for wool to the water.
Close the washer door and let the agitation cycle finish before submerging your wool coat in the water. Let the washing machine finish the cycle. Remove the wool coat from the washer immediately.
Lay thick towels flat on a level surface and place the wool coat out top of them. Keep the wool coat spread out to its original shape during the drying process. Let the coat dry for several hours out of direct sunlight and away from direct heat. Flip the coat every hour--while replacing the damp towels with dry ones--until the wool is dry.
