Giving a glass jar a second life as a storage container is a great way to save money and tidy up your space. There's a notable catch to doing this, though, and it's the fact that some glass jars aren't exactly aesthetically pleasing. A branded lid or the scraps of an old label will often make your budget-friendly storage look unpolished and unrefined. Luckily, fixing such a problem could be as simple as wrapping your jars in jute twine. You can cover up expiration dates and hide company logos this way. And with the right arrangement of the twine, you might end up making your jars look surprisingly high-end, too. The natural brown color of the jute calls a rustic decor style to mind and allows the glass exterior to partially resemble a woven basket. This could also be the perfect DIY for those seeking to design a fall cottagecore space with autumnal magic.

In terms of supplies, all you'll need for adhering jute twine to the outsides of your glass jars is some hot glue and scrap burlap if you prefer. You'll wrap the jute around the container in a circular fashion starting from either the center of the bottom or just underneath the lid. You can choose to wrap the whole jar, or make a pattern so that parts of the surface are still see through. The new container will be especially handy for countertop and pantry organization, but realistically it could also be useful in just about any room of your house.

How to wrap old glass jars with decorative jute twine

The first step of this DIY is to thoroughly clean your glass jars. Peel away labels as slowly as possible, and soak the jars in soapy water to make scrubbing away residual glue easier. You can also remove lingering odors by filling up your jar with an even mixture of vinegar and water, and letting it sit overnight. Make sure to dry your jars before attaching anything to them. Start by adhering the end of your jute twine to the center of the jar's bottom. Work your way outward in a spiral formation from this point, hot gluing the twine down as you go. Once you reach the edges of the jar's base, continue the pattern up the sides. You can glue down a second length of twine to the top of the jar by beginning underneath the lid, and a third to the top of the lid in similar fashion. Avoid using excess glue around the jar's thread, because it could make it difficult to open.

Leave a gap between the jute wrap at the bottom of your jar and the top, and you'll have the perfect place to add a decorative design. Glue flat spirals onto burlap fabric, then trim around the circle to create a backing. Or, use thin strips to create stripes along the middle of the jar. Since the finished storage containers are so aesthetically pleasing, they're great when you want to incorporate open shelving without sacrificing a clutter-free look. Alternatively, you could put a battery-powered tea light into one of these jars to create a stunning table centerpiece.
