Many of us have a sock monster that enjoys infiltrating our laundry. The next time you're only able to find a lonely single, remember that it's not necessary to toss it out. After all, there are genius ways to use old socks for a cleaner home. But with creativity, they can actually add quirkiness to a space! Are you a fan of decor that has a bit of funk? If you cover your leftover tin cans with socks, you'll have just that. In a flash, they can become planters or DIY storage containers with loads of personality.

YouTuber SonalisHandmade demonstrated how cute this craft is. On top of being budget-friendly, it's great for repurposing empty soup cans that might've ended up in a landfill. Although you can use any old socks you like, the funkier the better. We're talking stripes, polka dots, and ones covered in puppy dogs. Or pull out socks with ice cream cones, geometric shapes, or funny sayings. If you don't have any, a thrift store will likely have a slew of choices. Another option is to jazz up plain ones with embellishments.

How to make stylish containers out of socks and old tin cans

Be sure to wash both the socks and the cans prior to starting. The last thing you'd want is for your decor to have a bad odor! Now, take a can and slide it into a sock, going bottom first. Pull the material taut and shift the can until it's nicely positioned. Tuck any extra fabric at the top inside of the container's opening. If it's a long sock, you could trim off some of the excess material if you'd prefer.

The DIY can be as simple as that. However, to make the container even more whimsical, consider giving it a face. Glue on googly eyes (like these CCINEE Wiggle Eyes) and draw a mouth with marker. Or, craft facial features out of fabric, cardboard, or OISAKLD Foam Sheets. Attach pieces of yarn to the outside of the can to represent hair. Naturally, the face will be easier to see on a sock that isn't heavily patterned. You could also skip the facial features and adorn the rims with beads, ribbon, or gemstones.

Put your quirky new decor to good use

Have you been searching for a unique-looking planter? Turn the container into one by popping a live plant inside. However, since the can doesn't have drainage holes, keep it in a mini flower pot that does. That way, you can easily remove it prior to watering time, allow it to drain, then put it back. But to keep things easy breezy, simply use the container to house an artificial flower or succulent instead. It could also make a wonderful gift, especially if you use a sock design you know the recipient will love. Or, to craft planters that can be incorporated into holiday centerpieces, use festive or fuzzy socks.

Alternatively, the cans would be excellent for storing small items. While it's possible to glue clothespins together to create countertop storage, these are way more eccentric. Fill them with personal belongings like jewelry and mementos. Or, set one on an entryway table to hold a set of keys or coins. It could be your new writing utensil container on a desk, while a group of them in the bathroom could be used for organizing essentials like cotton balls, swabs, and dental picks. Another idea is to add weight to a couple of cans and turn them into bookends. They'd be useful, as well as a fun pop.
