Lowe's Or Home Depot: Who Has The Better Lawn Mower Selection?

When it comes to buying a new lawn mower, there are so many options to choose from. But when it comes to where you're going to buy that new lawn mower, in terms of major retailers, the competition boils down to Lowe's v.s. Home Depot. It's not a competition of which store has the better lawn mowers; it's a competition about which has the better selection. And, overall, Lowe's wins by carrying 31 different brands to choose from, while Home Depot offers 28. 

The reason we can't compare whether Lowe's or Home Depot carry better-quality lawn mowers is that there is too much crossover in the brands they carry. At both, you can find John Deere, the USA's most popular lawn mower brand, as well as other familiar names like Sunseeker, Ariens, Black & Decker, and Yard Force. That said, some brands only available at Home Depot or Lowe's because of exclusive partnerships with private labels. If you want a Ryobi or Cub Cadet, go to Home Depot. If you want a Toro, EGO, Kobalt, or Husqvarna, go to Lowe's. 

Now, as the numbers indicated earlier, these are hardly the only brand names you'll see when shopping at Home Depot or Lowe's. However, there is a pretty glaring difference in what you'll find there. See, Lowe's may have more brands to choose from, but Home Depot has more models. 

Whether you're shopping online or in in-store, the 31 brands Lowe's offers make it a favorite among experts for gardening tools and equipment. However, while Lowe's offers more brands, it has fewer models to choose from than Home Depot. Let's start with push mowers. Lowe's has 62 models to choose from, whereas Home Depot has 72. This means that while Home Depot has fewer brands, it offers a wider selection of models within those brands than Lowe's does its wider variety. 

The same is true for riding lawn mowers. You can find riding mowers at Lowe's; it is just that it offers only 53 models to choose from, whereas Home Depot has 91. This list is a full range of riding lawn mowers, zero-turn mowers, and standing rider mowers that are either battery-powered, like the Ryobi R1 80V, or gas-powered, like the John Deere S120. Lowe's also offers gas- and battery- powered mowers.

Both stores also carry a great lineup of robotic, automated lawn mowers like Sunseeker, Mammotion, and Worx. Each also sells a selection of more budget-friendly, less well-known brands that widen the selection even further. However, in terms of sheer number of brands, Lowe's wins over Home Depot for having the best lawn mower selection. 

Our research methodology consisted of a review of two primary sources: Lowe's and Home Depot websites. We counted the number of brands available at both stores and quickly determined that Lowe's offered the widest variety of brands, while Home Depot offered more riding lawn mower models. We also reviewed the websites to compare which brands overlapped between the stores and which were exclusive to each store. We also used commentary from outdoor equipment experts quoted in Greenpal to determine Lowe's as the store with the best selection.
