Don't Toss Old Plastic Lids — Make A Beautiful Towel Holder For Your Bathroom

So much modern bathroom decor is minimalist and sleek, but that style can sometimes feel more cold than comforting. Luckily, cozy, colorful decor doesn't have to be expensive or difficult to make. Rather than settling for a boring, basic towel bar, this DIY turns an old plastic container lid into neat storage for bathroom hand towels. By decoupaging a floral pattern onto the lid and attaching it to a ring, YouTube DIYer Antonia Pires Artesanato created an adorable towel holder that's perfect for hanging near the sink. All you need is a bit of ribbon, twine, glue, and pretty paper or fabric to transform an otherwise ordinary plastic lid.

Antonia used a clear plastic craft ring to make this towel holder. While you can find a pack of 4-inch clear acrylic craft rings on Amazon for about $13, there's a more sustainable and affordable way to create this bathroom storage. If you have another old container lid, cut out the middle to make your own towel ring from the rim. Otherwise, look for thick, circular plastic packaging, like the rings used to secure lids around the necks of glass jars, and repurpose it for this simple project.

Though the DIYer used a floral napkin to upcycle the plain plastic lid into a cuter way to hang bathroom towels, any decorative paper or fabric will work. Try using material with a solid color for a different style or choosing a pattern that better matches your home decor. This beautiful holder could also create a designated spot to hang kitchen hand towels.

Start by turning the plastic lid into the decorative backing for the towel ring. Using Mod Podge or white glue, paint the top and around the rim of the lid. Antonia Pires Artesanato peeled the top layer from a decorative napkin and carefully laid it over the wet plastic. Trim any excess paper or fabric, leaving enough material to fold over the edges of the lid. Brush another layer of glue on top to seal the decoupage. To give the lid a flat back, the DIYer glued a piece of colorful craft foam to the other side, but cardboard would work, too. Hot glue ribbon around the edges to give it a finished look.

While the clear plastic ring would look fine on its own, Antonia wrapped it in ribbon for a cuter finish. You can also use ribbon, yarn, or twine to disguise an upcycled plastic ring. To create the hanger and attach your towel ring, make two small holes on opposite sides of the circle. Tie a loop of twine or ribbon in one hole to form the hanger. Thread another string through the other hole, and tie it tightly around the ring. Glue decorations like bows or beads onto the plastic lid.

This genius way to use lids from old plastic containers can be hung from a hook on your bathroom wall or looped over the handle of a cabinet or bathroom closet door for easy access after washing your hands.
