Upcycle Old Baskets And Turn Them Into Wall-Hung Storage Shelves
When you have an abundance of baskets, it's easy to run out of ideas about how to use them. Sure, there are plenty of creative ways to use baskets to organize your kitchen clutter or bathroom spaces. But sometimes the best options are the simplest. Shayna from the TikTok account theflippedpiece decided to turn an old basket into a wall shelf — she literally added a wood shelf inside of a basket to hang on the wall. It's a slight upgrade to the idea of simply mounting a basket on your wall. Plus, it can increase the amount of storage space.
You don't need a lot of supplies for this project. You might even have everything at home already. The main part of the project is a basket. Maybe you held onto your old Longaberger baskets or have a tired rattan basket lying around. If you don't have any on hand, there's a good chance you'll find plenty of options at secondhand stores. Either way, a basket with relatively straight sides is best for attaching the shelf inside.
The other main material you'll need is wood to create the shelf. You could repurpose a shelf you already have, like the original creator, or simply cut a piece of scrap wood. Just make sure to choose your wood size based on the depth of the basket to ensure the shelf fits within the basket. Other than that, grab some screws to secure the shelf inside the basket and a can of spray paint for customizing.

Ready to turn your old baskets into decor that doubles as space-saving storage? Start by cleaning the basket with a damp cloth. Next, measure the width of the basket to determine the length of the board you need for the shelf. The original DIY includes one shelf, but if your basket is large enough, feel free to add more. Once you have your measurements, cut the board to the correct length and paint or stain it if desired. You can also spray paint the basket to match or stand out. Allow the paint to dry completely before positioning the board where you want it. Then, simply use screws to secure it from the outside of the basket.

Finally, add any special touches you want to incorporate. For instance, if you're hanging the basket shelf in your entryway, consider placing hooks underneath the wood shelf so you never lose your keys again. Alternatively, a wood dowel attached just above the shelf at the front of the basket creates a rim that keeps items from falling off the shelf. If the basket has a long handle that goes side-to-side, flip it downward to act as a towel holder in the bathroom or kitchen. And if you want to make the items on the shelf easier to see, brighten the top of the basket with a puck light or fairy lights.
