Silver pieces that you have around your home don't have to be sent away for professional cleaning. You can remove the tarnish at home using basic, household items. When combined, washing soda and aluminum foil create a reaction that causes the tarnish to move from silver to the foil. This process is an easy way to clean silver without using a lot of effort or paying for a professional cleaning.
Spread aluminum foil across the bottom of a plastic container with the shiny side facing up. Put all the silver on top of the foil. They should all touch each other or the foil.
Boil 1 gallon of water.
Shake a 1/4 cup of washing soda over the silver and pour the boiling water over top. Stir the mixture and then let it sit for 15 minutes.
Remove the silver from the solution, making sure to wear gloves. Use a soft cloth to dry and buff the silver. Repeat the entire process if you don't have the results you want.
