How to Kill and Permanently Get Rid of Fleas

Few things are more irritating than discovering that your pet, home or yard is infested with fleas. Fleas survive by feeding off the blood of humans and warm-blooded animals like cats and dogs. If not exterminated in a timely manner, these pests can jeopardize your health and the health of your pet. Learning how to kill and permanently get rid of fleas is a must for any pet owner or homeowner.

Fleas often ride pets into a home.

Step 1

Bathe your pet with a flea and tick shampoo. Work up a thick later and let it soak into your pet's fur for 5 to 15 minutes. Rinse your pet thoroughly with water and pat him down with a towel until dry. You can get recommendations on flea and tick shampoo brands from your veterinarian or at pet stores.

Step 2

Place a flea collar on your pet for added protection.

Step 3

Clean your house thoroughly, concentrating on areas frequented by your pet, as this is where most of the flea eggs and larvae will be located. Wash your pet's bedding and all rugs or thick-piled fabrics thoroughly.

Step 4

Vacuum your entire house. Sprinkle salt on your carpet and let it sit for approximately 24 hours. The salt will kill fleas and larvae. Vacuum the carpet again thoroughly. Remove the vacuum's collection bag and dispose of it immediately by placing it into a secure garbage can to prevent captured fleas from escaping and re-entering your carpet and pet's bedding.

Step 5

Spray a flea insecticide containing pyrethrins on your carpet to kill all remaining fleas in your house. Pyrethrins are natural insecticides produced by certain species of the chrysanthemum plant.

Step 6

Treat your yard. Fleas thrive in cool, shady areas outdoors. Spray the insecticide in all shady areas in your yard and in areas your pet frequently visits. Follow all directions on the insecticide label for lasting effectiveness.

Step 7

Treat your pet, home and yard on a regular basis to permanently get rid of fleas. Fleas can infest your pet and property at any time if left unprotected.
