The Timeless And Homey Trend That's Set To Take Over Kitchens In 2027
Perhaps it's just me, but as we near the end of 2026, it seems the world is swirling around us at a faster, more turbulent pace every day. As 2027 approaches, most of society is grasping for a firmer hold, something to ground and relax us as an antidote to the speed and state of the world. That "something" is becoming our interiors. As a 13-year interior designer, I've seen countless fleeting aesthetic trends come and go, but this multi-year seismic societal shift taking place feels fundamentally and significantly larger than just the hottest looks. Instead of the fussy, standoffish, catalog-bland spaces inspired by one beige influencer or another, 2027 will come with a fierce wave of personality, comfort, and warmth for creating sanctuaries at home with a calming, lived-in feel. And believe it or not, kitchens are no exception to this upcoming trend, evolving to incorporate the cozy, homey, thoughtful personal touches usually reserved for living rooms.
By reimagining the priorities for the kitchen, 2027's cooking areas will look a whole lot more like living spaces, with a newfound appreciation for the creature comforts usually omitted in the name of practicality and flow. Obviously, I'm 100% in favor of a kitchen with both of those attributes operating at their highest levels. But I'm also excited to see the narrow scope of what the kitchen should be widening to embrace a more inviting, stay-a-while mentality that slows the "flow" a bit in the best way. From homier lighting selections and thoughtfully curated decor to furniture-style cabinetry and intentional lounge spaces, 2027's kitchens will feel less like workspaces and more like deliberately, well-appointed (slow-)living spaces.
Kitchens will be crafted with a homey, welcoming furniture-feel
The kitchens of 2027 will move toward more of a living room aesthetic centered around freestanding (or the appearance of such) furniture pieces and dedicated hang-out zones, the overall feel of which encourages people to stick around a bit. Rather than default to the expected bank of conventional cabinet boxes, more homeowners have been showcasing repurposed vintage furniture pieces. Others have opted for crafted, custom cabinetry with the same standalone feel for a furnished rather than constructed vibe.
Whether it be an antique cabinet turned kitchen island, a central dining/work table in place of a traditional island, a new glass-front cabinet milled with unique detailing to look like a freestanding hutch, or a built-in cushioned seating nook for morning coffee, more thought and care is being directed toward kitchen storage. The result will look collected, curated, and laid-back, much like the historical predecessors from before stock cabinetry ruled the roost.
Additionally, kitchen layouts will be changing to embrace this new living room mentality. To encourage family connection, more homeowners are incorporating kitchen lounges, sometimes called "keeping rooms" or "hearth rooms." These are usually small, cozy sitting areas with comfortable, cushy seating, drink tables, and sometimes a TV and/or fireplace. These little hang-out zones are meant to capture those in-between moments, such as after-work cocktails, pre-meal family chats as someone's cooking, or a warm, connected place to work or read with loved ones in close kitchen proximity. These seating areas are becoming so beloved that some families are even choosing them in lieu of eat-in dining, preferring to eat meals in the formal dining room.
The finishing touches that make a kitchen feel thoughtful and inviting
Aside from the furniture-centric changes coming for 2027 kitchens, the finishing touches that make a living space so comforting, personal, and intentional are also high on the priority list. People are discovering the joy of intimate, warm lighting zones once reserved for living spaces. Instead of only a ceiling packed with recessed can lighting, kitchens are leaning on more elegant, considered lighting selections. As well as the lamp on the countertop trend, you'll also find floor lamps making their way into kitchens, plus decorative wall sconces, art lights, under-cabinet lighting, and over-the-sink pendants. Just, please, use dimmers — the more control you have over that wonderful glow, the longer you'll want to stay.
In addition to feeling like a properly lit living space, 2027's kitchens will also be all about the decorative personalizations that take a room from utilitarian to elevated and worthy of taking your time. Decorative kitchen open shelving (not "functional" open kitchen shelving replacing cabinets — that's generally a no from me) has encouraged people to add more thoughtful and intentional decor. In the coming year, this idea is climbing to the next level.
For example, don't save all the best art for the living room — give the kitchen some love and showcase some of your most beloved pieces in a space you enjoy every day. Layer in homey stacks of your favorite books or cookbooks and real or convincing LED candles for that super hygge vibe. Upgrade cabinet hardware to something one-of-a-kind that makes you smile. Whatever personal touches express your own unique perspective, bring them into the kitchen to give it the same nuanced, curated, cozy feel as your living spaces.
