It doesn't take much to create a big statement — take it from DIYer The Gooch of the YouTube channel A Dose of Daily Fun. After a recent visit to Dollar Tree, he managed to create a textured turquoise vase that risks stealing the show away from the florals. The key is to glue molded shapes (flowers, in The Gooch's case) and gemstones onto a clear vase, and then paint everything.

With its lush, cool color and rich details, this project feels like a personalized, modern version of mid-century Shawnee pottery, particularly the company's Iris vase. Since those can average around $60, and new vases generally retail for half that amount, why not try a cost-effective approach? It'll also provide a unique decorative statement and a fun way to kill time. Plus, the bold, detailed vase isn't quite as labor-intensive as you might imagine.

Snag a Dollar Tree Clear Glass Cylinder Vase ($1.75), flower silicone molds, and Crafters Square Ocean Blue Glass Gems. Besides those Dollar Tree supplies, make sure to also grab a glue gun, a bottle of DAP RapidFuse Super Glue, a paintbrush, a bowl, a container of baking soda, and white and turquoise paint. (The Gooch opted for the Rich Art Acryology Premium Acrylic Paint for $1.25).

How to turn Dollar Tree items into a textured vase

Start by using your hot glue gun to fill the silicone molds to the top, ensuring you don't miss a spot. While those are waiting to dry, take your glue and adhere the beads to the glass in a pattern of your choosing. Once that's dry and the molded shapes have set, take them out of the tray, use your glue gun, and then apply the motifs directly to the glass. Add drops of white and blue paint to a bowl with some baking soda, and once everything is mixed well, apply a few coats to your glass vase. In an hour or two, you'll be left with a trendy Dollar Tree vase that looks high-end.

While you might not have gone the valuable vintage vase route this time around, there are plenty of reasons to pursue this Dollar Tree DIY. For one, you can customize the color, gems, and patterns to your liking. Consider white and pink paint for a playful touch, or stick with beige if your style leans neutral. Another option is to trade the glass gems for these slimmer, diamond-like Decorative Artificial Acrylic Gemstones.

Moreover, you can design the vase to match your seasonal and holiday decor. For instance, instead of flower silicone molds, opt for the Seasonal Collection Halloween Molds when October rolls around. The retailer also has butterfly-, seashell-, and fruit-shaped molds that would work well for summer. Either way, don't forget to style your finished product around similar colors, prints, and textures to add a fun pop.
