Save Scrap Paper To Craft An Easy, Rustic Wreath
Wreath forms can be made from various materials, including branches, foam, and wire. But have you ever thought about crafting one using scrap paper you were about to toss out? It's actually not as strange as it sounds. If you need an example, let DIYer Mrs Clare Hoops be your inspiration. She demonstrated how to turn pieces of paper into a rustic DIY wreath by braiding strips of it together. And just like any other wreath, you can then upgrade it with all sorts of embellishments.
Part of the charm of this project comes down to the scrap paper itself. Now, you could try the braiding method on different types — but using kraft paper (which is brown) helps give the wreath its earthy look. Keep your eyes peeled for it when opening a giant package, as it's sometimes used to protect fragile items. Or, get out leftover paper grocery bags that you've been wanting to repurpose. How much of the material you'll need depends on how big of a wreath you'd like to create. Other supplies to grab are scissors, a rubber band, a stapler, wire, and your favorite wreath decorations.
How to make a DIY paper wreath
Begin by stacking a few pieces of scrap paper on top of each other and smoothing them out. Cut three piles of strips that are several inches wide. One by one, roll each pile to create a thick paper strand. Next, gather the strands together at one end, then secure them with a rubber band. Here's the part where you start braiding. Use the classic, back-and-forth method until you reach the end. Add a couple of staples to keep the braid from coming undone.

If you'd like to make the wreath larger, simply attach extra strands. When you get close to the end of the first braid, stop. Roll up three additional piles of paper and staple them to the ends of the others. Continue braiding until you have a much longer piece. Whichever size you go with, you can then turn the braid into a wreath form by bending it into a circle. Finally, secure it with either staples or wire.
Time to decorate your scrap paper wreath
Let's start by addressing the elephant in the room. This probably isn't a wreath you'll use as front door decor. Although you could spray the form with Aleene's Spray Acrylic Sealer to give it a protective finish, it likely wouldn't last in the elements. But don't worry, there's actually a cuter way to add style to your front door! So when you're decorating it, keep in mind that it's a wreath you'll be hanging inside the home. You can use natural materials or purchase crafting supplies from a retailer.
If you want to stick to items from nature, consider attaching things like pinecones, acorns, twigs, or feathers. Glue them to the wreath form or use wire. Alternatively, you could grab faux versions like this Winlyn Decorating Kit, which comes with a variety of fall adornments. But if you'd rather transform it into a DIY holiday wreath, use items like artificial pine branches, berries, and ornaments. Or, keep it neutral by gluing on buttons, wooden beads, flowers, or greenery. Don't forget to top your scrap paper wreath with a lovely bow!
