No Knives Needed: 'Bedazzled' Pumpkins Are The Coolest Front Porch Trend
You may think you've seen it all when it comes to dressing up a pumpkin for Halloween. But if you're looking for modern ways to decorate a pumpkin, forget the typical toothy jack-o'-lanterns and painted faces and get ready for a much simpler option. It's time to trade in a spooky face for a little sparkle. Bedazzling pumpkins with rhinestones and larger stick-on gems is the social media trend of the season, with creative DIY crafters giving their front porch some personality without a knife or a single scoop of slimy pumpkin guts.
The idea fits into a broader bedazzling revival (aka gem-maxxing) brought to us by Gen Z and the overarching whimsy-maxxing trend. Long story short, creators have been adding sparkle to everyday items like water bottles, phones, or beauty product packaging. The appeal is making an ordinary object feel playful, and a pumpkin is no exception. Social media is finding plenty of unique ways to add that sparkle, too. You can arrange flat-back jewels into deliberate patterns or scatter them across the rind for an anything-goes look. Keep the decoration simple with a few oversized gems, or settle in for a more time-consuming project with tiny rhinestones — there's no wrong way to do it.
The biggest appeal to this year's trend is that there's no carving involved. No wrestling with a knife, hollowing out the center and making a mess, or committing to a design you won't be able to undo once you've cut it. Oh, and there's much less risk of injuring yourself, so you can get the kids involved without any worry.
How to give your Halloween pumpkins a little sparkle
To take your fall porch decor to the next level with this sparkly seasonal addition, begin by wiping your pumpkin clean and letting it dry completely. Arrange a few gems on your work surface to decide on a pattern before sticking them onto the pumpkin. Or, just improvise — sometimes the best designs happen without a plan.
If you do need a plan, many creators follow the pumpkin's grooves with rows of rhinestones, build little flowers around larger stones, or create jack-o'-lantern faces with contrasting gem colors. If you really want to follow the gem-maxxing trend, scatter jewels like confetti. To put them on the pumpkin, use tweezers or a rhinestone pickup tool to handle the gems and apply glue (such as Gem Tac) sparingly to the back to stick them in place on the pumpkin.
Your pumpkin's color can do some of the decorating, too. Using a white pumpkin with clear gems or pearls looks elegant, while a symbolic purple pumpkin will become much more eye-catching with matching violet stones. Creative mixes, like a pale green-painted pumpkin with gold accents, could look lovely, and a black faux pumpkin will really make any design pop. Many creators use an artificial pumpkin as a longer-lasting and rot-free alternative to a garden-grown variety, but real pumpkins are charming because no two are alike. If you are using a real one, just make sure to remove every rhinestone, sticker, and other noncompostable embellishments before composting it when the season is over.
