Woman Uses Wood Blocks To Create A Stylish Vase With A Unique Dollar Tree DIY
There are so many tips and tricks for decorating with plants, but it's hard to beat a stylish vase. If buying a new decorative pot is out of your budget, there's a Dollar Tree DIY to craft a stunning vase with wood accents. In a YouTube video, Style My Sweets showed how a few Dollar Tree wood blocks can elevate a basic plastic planter. By adding staggered rows of the wood blocks onto a plastic planter, the DIYer created a chic vase for just a few dollars.
Dollar Tree's Tumbling Towers Game ($1.75) is made up of rectangular blocks that are surprisingly good for crafting. Each set comes with 72 of the wooden blocks, allowing you to customize your container without spending much. For $1.50, the budget-friendly store sells a plastic indoor and outdoor planter that would work well for this DIY. However, you could upcycle an old container from your gardening supplies for the base. Using glue and paint you already have on hand will also help to keep costs low for this project.
The vase is perfect for holding small potted plants, and looks like a stylish planter. However, you could place fresh cut flowers or faux floral decor inside for a different look. This unique way to display plants would sit nicely on a bookshelf or plant stand to add color and texture to any room.
Turning a plastic pot into a stylish vase with wood blocks
Starting at the top of the plastic pot, the DIYer stuck the wooden game pieces onto the planter, placing the first row of blocks right up against the rim. She applied a dab of hot glue to the back of each block before pressing it onto the container. Since the wood pieces were too long to fit flush in the last gap in the row, she attached the ends of it on top of the blocks on either side, overlapping them. This technique created a three dimensional effect that made the vase look more dynamic. The DIYer staggered each row, so that the blocks that stuck out weren't aligned.
If you prefer a more seamless design, you could try cutting the Dollar Tree blocks to size, though it won't look perfectly uniform because of the shorter piece in each row. Alternatively, stack your tumbling tower pieces around the plant pot, using an adhesive to hold your structure together. Alternate the position of the rows for a cylindrical shape. With this method, your vase will look like it's been made of wood, with the container simply sitting inside.
Decorating and styling your wood block vase
To really bring the functional decor to life, Style My Sweets painted the blocks white and shades of brown in an alternating pattern. To get a unique texture and shade on some of the blocks, the DIYer brushed them with white paint and sprinkled coffee grounds over them. Though she waited to decorate until after assembling the vase, planning out your pattern and painting the block ahead of time may be easier.
Though the DIYer's brown and white vase looks chic, you can color your decor however you'd like. Use a wood stain or paint all of the blocks the same color for a sleek, modern vibe. Or, for a rustic look, leave the blocks as they are.
The woman used the decorative vase to hold a small, potted snake plant. Rather than planting directly inside the container, adding another pot with holes will provide better drainage. If you'd like to display fresh flowers, place a glass or cup inside your vase to ensure the water doesn't leak. And if you don't have a good spot to set your DIY vase, you can use Dollar Tree finds to create a gorgeous flower pot stand on a budget.
