Not Pumpkins Or Blowups: A Charming Way To Decorate Your Front Door For Fall
As Aunt Jet famously said, "There's a little witch in all of us." Therefore, it's only fitting that we decorate like it. Nostalgic '90s Halloween decor is on the rise, and spooky season aficionados are leaning into the comforting, charming aura of the past. Rather than settle for the predictable ghoulish blow-ups and jack-o'-lanterns, homeowners are yearning for something more meaningful. Creator being_injeanuity on TikTok (Jean) decided to go the "Practical Magic" route with a whimsical front door arch that belongs in the Owens house, and you'd be remiss not to follow suit.
The autumnal display with faux florals, witch hats, and mini pumpkins feels like something out of a fairytale. At times, it's difficult to avoid falling into kitsch when it comes to spooky decor, but it is possible to keep things elegant, as Jean demonstrates when crafting her DIY Halloween decor. Not only is the floral arch a creative, sophisticated way to embrace the season, but it's a cost-effective approach that won't take more than an afternoon to assemble. Even better? Remove the witch hats once October 31 passes and enjoy the scenery ahead of Thanksgiving.
How to create a Practical Magic-inspired doorway arch
Now that you've learned there's a cuter way to decorate your front yard for fall, start by grabbing all of the essentials for your arch. According to Jean, you'll need the following tools and equipment: chicken wire, wire cutters, a heavy-duty stapler, zip ties, and a fishing line. As far as the fun stuff, have a gander at new Dollar Tree home decor or your local craft store for faux florals, ribbons, pumpkins, and all other stylish accessories you'd like to sprinkle throughout the display. If you have a green thumb, you can include blooms from your garden.
@being_injeanuity This elegant fall front door arch (inspired by Practical Magic!) is easier to make than you think! Bonus: the base of this front door display works across multiple seasons so you can just leave it up. Save this doorscape idea for later! 🍂✨ Here's exactly how I made it: Supplies Chicken wire Wire cutters Heavy-duty stapler (or outdoor Command hooks or light clips) Faux or foraged greenery: leaves, branches, flowers Optional accents: mini pumpkins, witch hats, outdoor ribbon Zip ties Fishing line How to build this fall floral arch: Create your base: Staple the chicken wire directly to the door frame. If your trim isn't wood, you can build a simple frame from PVC or scrap wood (lots of tutorials if you google it) and secure it to your doorway. Alternatively, you can attach the chicken wire using outdoor command hooks or light clips. Shape the arch foundation: Cut your chicken wire twice as wide as you need, then fold or curve it into a (somewhat flat) tube shape. This gives the structure a little bit of volume so you can tuck greenery inside rather than it sitting flat. Layer in greenery: Start with your largest stems or leafy branches as the base. Slide them into the chicken wire and secure with zip ties where needed. Add details: I used fishing line to hang witch hats and tie mini pumpkins so they appear suspended within the arch. Bonus tip: wear a hat. All sorts of things flew into my hair as I was putting this up ... like a caterpillar 😂 Shoutout to my dad for helping this shortie staple down my chicken wire! To start, fold an appropriately-sized chicken wire into a tube shape — which Jean says will provide additional support once it's time to add the flower stems — and use the stapler to fasten the base of the project to the frame of your door, playing into the shape if it's curved. Cut away any excess pieces, if necessary. After you've assembled your greenery (of the real or fake variety), place the stems within the chicken wire and secure with zip ties. Jean also recommends starting with the larger florals that will act as the foundation of the arch.
Top off the whole look with things you love: ribbons, faux gourds, lights, and of course, floating witch hat decorations, which are not mandatory but highly encouraged. (Do note the package of witch hats does not include assembly materials.) Tie the whole look together with other chic features, like a a multi-colored group of squash, corn husk accents for the front door, rattan planters, and classic decorative accents featuring the stars of Halloween: ghosts, spiders, pumpkins, and bats.
