You gotta admire the creative people in this world who can look at an empty container and say, "Hey, I can make something out of that!" Although most of us just toss leftover detergent bottles into the recycling bin, YouTuber Dy nete Araújo shared a project demonstrating that they're far from trash. It just takes a marker, a sharp cutting tool, and a wooden dowel to turn an empty detergent bottle into a clever toilet paper holder. The dowel secures a roll near the top, while the bottom is a spot to keep extras. We get it, you could probably just use a basket for the job. There's also a retro find you can upcycle to store toilet paper. But if you're looking for a DIY that repurposes containers, along with pulling out one's crafty side, you're in luck.
The project requires a plastic vessel that's large enough to hold rolls of TP. Now, the content creator used a 5-liter detergent bottle, but it's not one you might easily find in a store. It shouldn't be a problem, though. Instead, you can transfer the idea to a different-shaped container that's similarly sized — like this 182-oz Tide Simply All-In-One laundry detergent sold at Target. What it comes down to is that the bottle's width needs to be bigger than the standard roll of toilet paper's, which is 4 1/2 inches. There's a good chance you have a workable container if you buy your detergent in bulk. While it's not necessary, you might also want to grab some crafting supplies to make it the cutest toilet paper storage solution on the block.
Repurpose a detergent bottle into a unique toilet paper holder
First thing's first, remove any labels and wash the container out. The latter will make it less messy when making your cuts. Next, come up with a plan for the toilet paper holder's design. Just like the YouTuber, you'll want to slice off the spout and handle — leaving a bin at the bottom, while also keeping some of the plastic material at the top in place. Think of it as being similar to a rounded J shape. Draw the design on the bottle, then carefully cut along the lines using a sharp tool like a hobby knife.
Now, draw a circle on either side of the top portion of the container. The dowel will be sliding through them, so make sure they align. Cut out the circles and toss them away. At this point, you might want to give the inside of the bottle an even better cleaning, since toilet paper will be sitting in it. Once it's dry, decorate the outside with marker if you wish. Then, thread the dowel through the holes and a roll of toilet paper to hold it in place. Set a couple of rolls in the bottom portion as well, and it'll be bathroom ready.
Ideas for jazzing up your new toilet paper storage solution
If you're not crazy about the color of the bottle (or you want it to match your decor), simply paint the outside with acrylic paint. Be sure to lightly sand the plastic first to help it stick better. Add beautiful, colorful designs if you want the holder to stand out — like with this FolkArt Paint for Plastic Kit. Don't feel like painting? Wrap the bottom of the container with jute rope to go along with a farmhouse bathroom aesthetic. Alternatively, use contact paper for a fun look.
Give the bottle sparkle by lining the cut edges with flatback rhinestones. Or, keep it simple and glue a large artificial flower to the holder's front. However you decorate the piece (or even if you don't), it'll be an adorable way to store your toilet paper. Set it on a surface near the toilet, so that the top roll can be used. When it runs out, you'll have extra TP at your fingertips to avoid "emergencies." It could even become quite the conversation piece if guests come over. Surely they'll be impressed by your creativity!
