Ditch Wreaths: A More Unique Way To Decorate Your Front Door With Vintage Charm
If putting a wreath on your front door seems boring but leaving it bare isn't much better, it may be time to try something a little different. This idea from TikTok user ashtonsedita ditches the traditional wreath and instead transforms an old frame into a unique, vintage-inspired door hanger. All you have to do is fill the frame with eccentric embellishments.
This project is fun for crafty types and is just as easy for beginners as for experts. If you have a collection of small vintage items that you'd like to display on your door, this DIY is just the ticket. The best part is that, since the look is vintage, there's no need for new materials — just use whatever extra craft supplies you have on hand.
These include acrylic craft paint, twine, a tube of wax-based metallic finish, ribbons and trims, faux flowers, fabric scraps, white pearl bead strands, and an assortment of your desired decor, such as the distressed playing cards used in the video. You'll also need a hot glue gun to attach the embellishments. Last but not least, grab a frame in your desired size (the one in the original DIY appears to be 16 by 20 inches). Remember that you can also experiment with different shapes, like round, oval, or square, instead of a rectangular one. Thrift shops, yard sales, and antique stores are great places to find unique, decorative frames if you don't already have one.
Assembling your vintage-inspired door hanger
The first step of this DIY is to transform the frame. It's relatively easy to upcycle an ordinary frame and turn it into something beautiful. For instance, you can follow ashtonsedita's lead and paint it a bright color, and then add distressed touches with antique gold Rub 'n Buff. If your frame is on the simpler side, have fun with patterns instead. Consider painting it with stripes, checkerboard patterns, or a scalloped border. Either have it match the colors of your house or choose contrasting hues for extra visual impact.
Now, it's time to decorate! Run some twine or ribbon across the back and hang your decorations as if on a laundry line. If you don't want playing cards, consider old postcards or photos. You can also hang pinecones, faux leaves and greenery, and antique ornaments. Then, use hot glue to decorate the outer part of the frame with fabric scraps, flowers, bows, or anything else you like.

Other ideas include layering smaller frames and gluing them together to make a larger door hanger, adding fairy lights, or attaching a solid backing where you can glue pictures and lettering. Alternatively, rustic tin sleigh bell ornaments and plaid ribbon are perfect accents for the winter holidays, while wild grapevine and mini pumpkins can help decorate your front door for fall.
