In a small bathroom, backup rolls sitting out in the open aren't exactly attractive, either. You can always balance an extra roll on the toilet tank, though it is not exactly stylish and could easily get knocked onto the floor — gross. If your bathroom wasn't blessed with storage cabinets, this TikTok DIY offers a smarter way to store toilet paper by tucking spare rolls inside the wall.

The project could be particularly useful in a compact powder room, narrow water closet, or bathroom with just a pedestal sink and no vanity. It does require cutting into the drywall, so it's best suited to homeowners rather than renters and should be approached carefully around wiring and plumbing.

The creator @dadmakesmagic on TikTok turns a blank space above the toilet into a shallow recessed compartment with room for three extra rolls. The opening is painted to blend into the surrounding wall, then covered with a hinged picture frame so the toilet paper essentially disappears into the decor. By taking advantage of unused wall space, this DIY is a genius way to add storage in a small bathroom. Best of all, the rolls stay close at hand without cluttering the toilet tank, floor, or countertop.

Before you do anything, sit on the toilet and decide where the compartment will be easiest to access. You should be able to reach it comfortably without twisting or standing up. Measure the rolls you normally buy and use those dimensions to plan the opening. The sizing options are up to you — you could create more compact storage for one or two rolls or a taller version that holds more. Create a paper template before doing anything permanent to your walls.

Use a stud finder (preferably one that can detect metal and wires) to inspect the location, and switch off the bathroom's electricity at the breaker. Don't cut through a stud unless a professional has confirmed it's safe. You never know if it's weight-bearing. Also check for plumbing lines, since pipes and electrical wiring may run through the wall cavity. If you're unsure what's behind the drywall, stop and call a professional rather than guessing.

Once you know for sure that there's nothing in the way, trace your template on the wall and cut the opening with a multitool or handsaw. Take your wood pieces to the miter saw and build a shallow box for the toilet paper that fits inside your pocket (a 1-by-4 should work just fine). Secure the box to the surrounding framing and finish the edges with joint compound before priming and painting to match the rest of the bathroom. To really conceal the toilet paper, attach a picture frame that matches your bathroom's aesthetic to one side with small hinges, and add a magnetic catch to keep it closed.
