The way you mow — including your speed, the amount of throttle you use, and the timing of your mowing sessions – can make grass more likely to stick together and cause clogs in the discharge area. And when that happens, you'll have to stop frequently to deal with those clogs, which makes mowing a lot more frustrating and time-consuming than usual.

There are plenty of lawn mowing tips that will make you a mowing expert, but they don't always focus on preventing clogs. Ideal mowing conditions are when the grass is dry and not too long. If you're mowing wet grass and waiting too long between mows, you're more likely to have a clogged-up grass catcher. Those conditions make the grass more likely to clump and get stuck somewhere along the line. It's also important to keep your blades sharp, mow slowly, and run the engine at full throttle to help the clippings keep moving without clumping.

Your mower works by creating a wind stream with the spinning blades. That naturally sucks the grass through the shoot and either out the side or into the grass catcher. To keep those grass clippings moving like they're supposed to, you need proper conditions to prevent them from slowing down or getting clumped up and stuck. Once the grass starts to clump, more and more clippings with stick to the clog and affect how the mower operates.

Adjust how you use the mower

Running the engine at full throttle while moving the mower slowly is exactly what you should do if you want to keep your grass catcher from clogging (and get the best cut). Manufacturers intend for you to operate your mower at full throttle. That's how you'll get the best fuel efficiency and cleanest cuts. If you reduce the throttle, the blades spin slower and the airflow isn't as high, which can slow down the grass clippings and cause clogging.

Another common lawn mowing mistake to avoid if you want a lush green yard without a clogged grass catcher is mowing too fast. Slowing down your speed while keeping the mower at full throttle optimizes the machine's performance. Moving slowly keeps a manageable amount of clippings moving through to the grass catcher. If you rush, you're sending a lot more grass through the chute at once and the mower might not be able to keep up. Slowing down can be even more important if your grass is longer since you're already sending bigger pieces through the machine.

The condition of your mower blades and mower deck also impacts how well the glass flows through the machine. Sharp, balanced blades keep the suction high, which pulls the cut grass through to the catcher smoothly. If the blades are dull or damaged, it tears at the grass and slows down the airflow. Likewise, lots of grass packed on the underside of the deck can impact the flow of air and keep the clippings from moving properly. Keep the blades sharp and the deck clean. Plan your mowing to time it right

Another issue with your timing comes from how frequently you mow. Ideally, you never want to mow more than ⅓ of the blade length on each mow. If you're waiting too long and cut off more than ⅓, you're more likely to have clumping. Cutting off more of the blade could also slow grass growth and affect the health of your lawn — cutting off less of the blade is a smarter way to help keep grass from clumping.

The overall length you're cutting is also a factor. If the clippings are more than 2 inches, even if they aren't more than ⅓ of the blade, you'll have issues when you're trying to bag the grass. Longer clippings can overload the chute and increase the risk of clogging. If you've let your lawn go a little too long, do several shorter mowing sessions to gradually reach a healthy height without damaging the grass or clogging your mower.
