Have Old Plates Lying Around? It's Time To Turn Them Into Cute Garden Decor
Not all plates are meant for the dinner table. Sometimes, they get chipped or scuffed, or they just aren't part of a matching set. Perhaps they're a size or pattern you'd never put out for guests. It doesn't mean you have to pack them up to be donated, though. Let your old plates shine again by bringing them out to the garden. You can very easily turn them into a whimsical border for your flowers and plants that gives off a storybook vibe. The project involves lining them up in the dirt instead of selecting more common types of landscape edging.
Do you have gorgeous flower beds that could use some defining? Edging can help separate them from other yard features and make the space look more tidy. Although glass plates aren't as strong and sturdy as materials like stone or brick, they can become an aesthetically-pleasing border without having to spend extra money. That is, of course, as long as you use old plates that you already own. You can always grab ones from a thrift store if you adore a certain style or need extras, but that still shouldn't break the bank.
Get out that old set you were gifted years ago to create a matching border for your garden. You could also use dinner plates in shades of the same color or with similar patterns. However, if you're feeling a little more adventurous — using a wide variety of plates would definitely enhance the quirkiness. Whatever you decide on, it's probably a good idea to check that it's not valuable vintage dinnerware first.
Repurpose plates into the most charming garden border
Start by measuring the space in your garden where you're looking to add the edging. That way, you can make sure you have enough plates to complete the job. Using a shovel, dig a trench in the dirt that is several inches deep. Keep in mind that you'll want the plates to sit deep enough that they'll be able to stay upright. Set them in a row close together, then fill the trench back up with dirt. You can also do this in a circular shape or make a double row of plates using various sizes.
You will now have a unique garden border that's sure to catch the eye of visitors. Complete the look by sprinkling in other vintage items to add to the eclectic style. Tea cups and old kitchen tools could blend in with the theme. While it'll be a fun, decorative border, it's also one you will have to be extremely careful with when landscaping your yard. Even tossing a ball for your four-legged friend could result in broken dishes. Fortunately, it shouldn't be difficult to change them out if you need to.
