DIYer Transforms Mini Terracotta Pots Into Adorable Thanksgiving Decor
With the number of gorgeous plants you can easily propagate from cuttings, no one would blame you if you got overexcited and filled your shopping cart with more pots than you know what to do with. Now, if the planters are medium or big, you can set them aside for when your plants are ready for transplanting. But what do you do with the smaller ones you got just because they were too cute to leave behind? You turn them into adorable decor for your Thanks- or Friendsgiving. Wondering how? DIYer @blessedcolette drew a turkey face on her mini terracotta pots and glued a few colorful leaves to their backs to craft simple Thanksgiving decorations you can do last minute.
This Thanksgiving DIY is fit for your Turkey Day decor and table, and is a fun craft you can share with your kids. Plus, it's 100% customizable, so you can put your own spin on it to fashion unique turkeys for your home. It also won't put too much of a dent in your pockets, especially if you have the mini terracotta pots at home. In such cases, you'll only have to get a few packs of faux fall leaves, like Dollar Tree's $1.50 pack of six leaves, depending on how many turkeys you plan on crafting. Colorful feathers will work, too. You'll also need a black marker and a few colorful ones to draw your bird's face. Or, get a few foam sheets in varied shades to make it look more realistic. Additionally, keep acrylic paint handy if you don't like the basic look of your pots. Don't forget your hot glue gun, either. Embellishments like tiny flowers (clip-ons are the least amount of work), decorative beads, and a roll of ribbon or twine are optional.
How to turn your mini terracotta pots into adorable turkeys for Thanksgiving
Quickly wipe down your terracotta pots with a damp microfiber cloth and let them air dry. In case you want to paint it a different shade, do it now. Otherwise, move on to the next step and decide how you'd like to bring your turkey alive. Would you be more comfortable drawing the eyes, beak, and snood with colorful marker pens? Or, do you want to use foam sheets for a vibrant finish? In case you fall in the first category, use a black marker to draw two small ovals, a.k.a. the eyes, and small curved lines over them to function as eyebrows. You can also draw on some eyelashes for a dramatic look. Then, use a yellow (the DIYer used an orange one) one for the triangular beak, and a red one for the snood. To ensure you don't mess up the face, draw a rough sketch with a pencil first.
But if you like the second idea better, cut your foam sheets in different shapes (feel free to use googly eyes to make things easier). You can even throw in two little feet to further boost your turkeys' cuteness factor, and glue them all in place. Finally, you'll be left with the tail. The DIYer glued artificial fall leaves to the back of her decorated pots. To follow in her footsteps, layer on as many or as little leaves in as many colors as you'd like — the choice is yours. Alternatively, adhere faux feathers, like the ones from FeelfunFeather. When it's ready, add some candy corn or other types of chocolates and put it in strategic spots for your guests to enjoy. Or, attach nametags via wooden clothespins and place them around your dining table.
