You may have found all the storage components to get your craft room tidy and organized. But if you don't further wrangle the smaller supplies you put in those containers, you may still not have top-notch organization. Stringy materials, in particular, can create a tangled mess when not securely sorted. This might force you to cut away whenever you need to access something caught in the knots, wasting material. But there's an easy DIY to get this kind of craft-room clutter under control, and it uses a household item you might already have: clothespins. At around 3 inches long, the average clothespin is an ideal size to organize shorter and leftover lengths of stringy supplies such as yarn and ribbon. It's also perfect for string that comes in small batches, such as individual skeins of embroidery floss.
And even if you don't already have clothespins at home, they're budget-friendly and readily available at many brick-and-mortar and online retailers. For instance, Home Depot offers a 50-pack of Everbilt Natural Wood Clothespins for about $5. You can also find miniature or extra-large clothespins if these sizes better suit your organization needs.
How and what to organize with clothespins
Clothespins are especially popular with organizing embroidery floss, and there are a deluge of social media and blog posts about it. That's because you can simply wind a full skein, which is approximately 8¾ yards long, around a pin. Then, clamp the end in the pin's grip jaws to secure it, and mark it with the DMC number using a label or by writing directly onto it if it's wood. (DMC is a famous embroidery thread brand with its own color chart numbers that many crafters consult.) The same method can work with scraps or short lengths of yarn labeled with the weight or beading cord marked with the thickness.
This craft storage idea can be used to organize other small items including rubber bands, fabric swatches of the same color family, loose paper sheets, and any power cables you use in the room. All of these items can simply be clipped together and organized using a clothespin. Then, toss the clipped items and supplies into bins or baskets. However, if you want to stay extra organized, consider stashing them into separate glass jars or compartmentalized drawer organizers.
