If you're ever struggling to find decorative inspiration for your home, you can always turn to Dave and Jenny Marrs. The stars of HGTV's "Fixer to Fabulous" are dab hands at transforming dated, lackluster properties into beautiful, contemporary spaces. Naturally, they also have a great eye for choosing the best paint colors for a home. If you've had a hard time finding the right shade for your walls and keep reaching for boring gray by default, there's something better out there. Dave and Jenny have a gorgeous alternative up their sleeve, and it's one you'll want to know about.

In Season 4, Episode 7 of "Fixer to Fabulous," the design-savvy couple renovate the Cape Cod-style home of Jenny's hairstylist. When discussing the home's color palette, Dave shares a potentially contentious opinion. "Grays are on their way out," he says. Jenny agrees, adding that "warmer and charming" is the trend. Although gray tones dominated interiors for much of the 2000s (earning the nickname "millennial gray"), these days homeowners are gravitating toward neutrals inspired by nature — think hints of brown or soft green. That doesn't mean gray is completely off-limits, though. Catch up on recent episodes of "Fixer to Fabulous," and you'll notice the Marrses still use the color regularly in their projects, with gray room ideas that prove the smoky shade is a great neutral. Instead, they're just becoming less saturated, with warmer undertones that feel softer and more welcoming.

Choosing the best alternative to gray paint

As Dave and Jenny Marrs remarked, the icy, flat grays that were popular a decade-plus ago have had their day. Aside from being overdone, they make a room feel cold, stark, and sterile. These hues were typically quite saturated, with blue or purple undertones that made them feel cooler. To embrace the warmth and charm Jenny mentions, choose neutrals that have undertones of pink, yellow, or brown. They have the same characteristics as millennial gray, but with a softer, more inviting feel.

So, what colors do the Marrs choose? For the Cape Cod-style home renovation in Season 4, they opt for Blue Gray by Farrow & Ball in the bedroom and master bathroom. It isn't strictly gray, nor is it a typical blue. The result actually appears sage green, with a touch of darker pigment that gives it a slight smoky feel. Similar shades are seen in other episodes of "Fixer to Fabulous." In Season 7 Episode 12, Benjamin Moore Revere Pewter, a take on classic "greige," is applied to the upper kitchen cabinets. Deeper neutrals and earthy greens also play a role, but gray undertones are the common thread. Season 7 Episode 1 features kitchen cabinets in steely cadet blue, while Farrow & Ball Drop Cloth, a calming mid-gray beige with plenty of warmth, is used in the kitchen in Episode 3 of the same season. Jenny and Dave's selections prove there isn't one particular paint color trend replacing gray in 2026, just warmer, subtler, and more nuanced variations prevailing.
