Who doesn't need more space for their houseplants? There are plenty of clever ways to hang plants and show off your greenery. Believe it or not, one option is hiding in the kitchen. You might think the old plastic container lids in the back of the cabinet are solely reserved for storage purposes (or destined for the recycling bin) when in fact they're ready, willing, and able to help out with your houseplants. Gather some of those stragglers you've accumulated and turn them into a hanging, tiered plant holder for your succulents à la smitasflair4creativity on Instagram (Smita Baruah).

Not only will this DIY add a decorative touch to the way in which you display your plants, but your cabinets will certainly feel less chaotic without all of the rogue lids. Plus, the project has its perks: It's a sustainable, inexpensive, and fun way to customize your decor without rushing to the store to pick up a hanging container that you could easily create yourself. To get started, grab the tools you'll need to assemble your gorgeous DIY planter: a craft blade, scissors, black marker, small drill, paint brush, primer, paint, varnish, patterned paper, and Mod Podge. Then, gather the materials for the planter's foundation: lids (similar in size and shape to the ones you'd get with Freshware's 24 ounce containers), a small circular container around four ounces in which to house the succulents, and jute string.

Turn your old plastic containers into a DIY hanging planter

Let creativity take center stage while you craft your easy DIY hanging planter. After you've chosen a color scheme and decorative paper, grab three lids, place a small container on top of each one at the center, and trace its perimeter. Keep in mind that you'll need the container's rim to rest within the hole you cut. Once that's set, drill four small holes in each corner of the lid, which will hold the jute string. Ensure everything lines up evenly on each lid.

Add a coat of primer to the lids before going over them with the paint color of your choice. Then, add primer to the small containers before applying the decorative paper with Mod Podge. Once that's dry, paint the rims of the containers for a complementary pop of color. Lastly, fasten four pieces of jute through each of the corner holes, adding small knots below each for support. Make sure the bottom of the lids are facing up. Then, it's time to rehome your plants.

Not only does this project allow you to play with different colors and patterns, but it also serves multiple purposes. The crafty DIYer used this as an opportunity to show off her succulents, but you can make it for your herbs and place the hanger near your kitchen countertop for easy access while cooking. What's more, it's a good way to utilize vertical space to house even more plants...because no one stops at just one!
