Old pill bottles might seem unsuitable to anything but the recycling bin, but they can actually be transformed into cute storage jars perfect for rustic décor. In her YouTube video, @lolidscreations walks her viewers through the process of turning old medicine bottles into tiny containers perfect for faux flowers, potpourri, or other seasonal décor. Her method is very simple and easy to replicate, making it the perfect weekend project for an entry-level DIYer.

To recreate this cute craft, you'll need some empty prescription bottles, twine, a lighter, and a hot glue gun. The fun part is just how easy it is to customize the final creation. Jute twine comes in plenty of playful colors, and you can even get a variety pack on Amazon and combine multiple colors on one bottle to create a rainbow or ombre effect. You can also accent the neck of the bottle with ribbon, decorative charms, pompoms, buttons, or anything else that takes your fancy.

How to make your decorative vase

Start by removing any stickers or residue from the bottle, which can be done with a solvent like rubbing alcohol or nail polish remover. Next, take a lighter and burn off any stray threads that might be sticking out of the twine to create a nice, smooth strand. (The DIYer demonstrates this in her video.) Place a dollop of hot glue in the center of the bottom of the pill bottle, and place the end of the twine on the glue. Start winding the twine outwards from this central point in a spiral, slowly working your way outwards and upwards, applying more glue as you go until you have entirely covered the surface of the bottle. Keep applying pressure to the wrapped strands, pushing them down towards the bottom of the bottle to prevent any gaps. Loli recommends avoiding applying too much glue, as you don't want to have any seeping out as you push down on the threads.

When you reach the top of the container, wrap some twine inside the mouth of the bottle as well to add polish to the look, and to avoid leaving any visible plastic. When you have completely covered the bottle, cut off the remaining jute twine and glue down the edge, tucking it inside the neck. Then, take your lighter and burn off any excess fuzz or stray threads from the entire bottle. This will also give the container a slightly rustic, modern farmhouse look. For the final touch, cut three pieces of twine of equal lengths and braid them together. Tie off the bottom and top of the braid with another small piece of twine and use a small dab of hot glue to seal the tie. Then, run a circle of glue around the neck of the bottle, and affix the twine braid. Apply the flame one last time, and you're good to go. Decorate the jute-covered bottle by gluing on lace, faux flowers, or charms if you wish. Don't forget to add faux florals or potpourri to the bottle as a finishing touch and display your new craft proudly.
