Don't Toss Your Egg Cartons — Reuse Them For Adorable Fox-Themed Fall Decor
Bringing the colors of fall into your home is a great way to make your space feel comfortable and inviting, especially as the temperature outside begins to drop. The yellows and oranges of the fallen leaves and the earthy browns of the trees are all warm hues that compensate for cloudier skies and earlier sunsets. There are so many different ways to incorporate these colors into your decor, but few are as creative as a woodland display DIY from Zad Crafts on YouTube. In it, they first make a fox for their display using a leftover egg carton, acrylic paint, and white craft felt. Then, they attach the forest animal, a couple of homemade toadstools, and some faux pinecones and autumn leaves to a log cross-section with a decorative candle on it. The finished scene is adorable and undeniably cozy.
In addition to an empty egg carton, hot glue and standard white PVA glue are both necessities for replicating this project. To make the toadstools, you'll have to gather up a couple of clean, leftover pistachio nut shells. You'll also need a small branch from a faux plant that you can use as a tree for the display. You can use your completed decor piece as a chic dining room table centerpiece, or as a means of tuning up the aesthetics of your living room. It could even serve as a unique way to decorate your fireplace mantel. No matter where you put it, it'll be a surefire conversation starter whenever you have guests over.
How to make a fox-themed woodland decor piece
Start by cutting three cups out of your egg carton and rounding off their edges. Flip one of these cups upside down — it'll be your fox's head. Make ears, whiskers, and a nose for it from spare carton pieces, and attach them with hot glue. Then, take the two remaining cups and adhere them to one another along their widest edges, so that they come together to create a single closed shape. This will be the fox's body. Next, peel apart a remaining sheet of carton to make a thinner layer of paper. Cut it into strips, and use the pieces plus some PVA glue to give the body a slightly rounder shape. Stack small squares of carton on top of the body, and then attach the head.
To finish making the fox, cut out a tail from leftover egg carton pieces, and hot glue it into place. Use acrylics to paint the animal orange, and attach felt pieces to it that outline the whiskers, ears, tail, and chest fur. Then, place the fox on your log round. Use hot glue to position your faux leaves, your stick-tree, and your pinecones around it. Paint your pistachio shells so that they resemble toadstools, and add a few of them to the display. Opt for a battery-powered candle instead of a real one to avoid the potential fire hazard. You could also upgrade this project with dried plants. Glue them down flat to your log to make a faux forest floor. If you have extra egg cartons, use them to DIY the cutest fall door decor.
