Sherwin-Williams' 2027 Color Of The Year Brings A Fresh, Whimsical Calm

On September 15, 2026, Sherwin-Williams and HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams teamed up to announce their cross-brand 2027 Color of the Year: Celery, a subtle yet crisp yellow-green. A blend of khaki (the co-brands' pick for Color of the Year last year), trending butter yellow, and sage green, Celery is what Sherwin-Williams calls a "tinted neutral" (a hybrid shade embodying characteristics of both a neutral color palette and a more vibrant hue). The color was selected by Sherwin-Williams' Trendsight Team to be a more energetic spin on a classic soothing soft green.

"I really see in 2027 colors becoming warmer and a lot more fresh and uplifting," Ashley Banbury, Color Marketing Manager for Sherwin-Williams, told Hunker in an exclusive interview. "We want to come into a space that makes us feel great." Evoking this mood throughout the home is exactly why they've settled on this particular shade. 

According to Sherwin-Williams, Celery's nature-inspired green side connects it to the outdoors and brings a sense of peace, while yellow undertones invigorate the color. "Celery was chosen as the 2027 Color of the Year because it reflects today's priorities: wellness, balance, and connection," stated Banbury in the press release. "Homeowners and designers are increasingly prioritizing wellness at home, seeking soothing environments that support mental health and overall well-being." As the new year rapidly approaches, the company chose Celery to counteract that pace and anxiety in the home, aligning with a global desire for grounded, unplugged serenity.

From a forecasting perspective, Sherwin-Williams' Celery is right in line with the major shift in soft greens we've been seeing everywhere, including in Behr's 2027 Color of the Year, Grounded, a warm and earthier take on olive green. "There's always an evolution of color," Banbury noted, pointing to recently trending sage greens. "They've had a little bit more of a neutral or cool or muddiness to them, but we see them shifting in the future to these warmer tones — a little lighter, a little brighter." With the design industry gravitating toward warmth, greens with yellow and brown undertones are poised to take over in 2027, and Celery certainly fits the bill.

When it comes to choosing your paint colors and integrating the Color of the Year into a design scheme, the quaintness and whimsy of Celery is right at home in a historical property or one with any sort of vintage or cottage style charm. While the use on walls may be lovely in homes with plenty of natural light, many will find that using the color in a satin or semi-gloss sheen on woodwork — such as wainscoting, board and batten, crown molding, trim, or doors — and cabinetry brings this happy shade to life. 

"What I really love about this color is when it's on kitchen cabinets. It's very fresh and feels unexpected," Banbury shared about her favorite ways to showcase the hue. "Especially if you have natural wood tones that can be combined with it, they play off of one another." Sherwin-Williams presented a complementary wood stain and palette — ranging from subtle neutrals to purples, blues, and even red — to bring the color to life, and all shades are available at Sherwin-Williams and Lowe's stores.
