It is sometimes necessary to remove the doors on your Kenmore Elite if moving the unit out of the room or into another home. Removing the doors gives a little more room between the unit and doorway openings. Removing a door on a Kenmore Elite fridge depends on which model you own. All Elite refrigerators require some disassembly of the water and electrical system before removing the doors. Some preparation is necessary regardless of the type of Elite you own.
Unplug the Kenmore Elite power cord from the wall outlet. When removing Kenmore Elite doors, you will need to work with some wires.
Open the freezer and refrigerator doors, and remove all of the contents from the door. Turn off the ice maker while you have the freezer door open. Once all contents are off the doors, close the doors.
Turn off the water supply valve behind the refrigerator. Removing doors requires disconnecting the water supply. The supply valve is a small T-handle on the water line behind the unit.
Pry off the top cover of the upper freezer door hinge with a flat-head screwdriver. Trace the outside edge of the upper hinge onto the refrigerator with a pencil. This helps line up the hinge correctly when it is time to reinstall the door. Remove the screws securing the upper hinge with a nut driver or Phillips screwdriver.
Lift the upper hinge off the top of the refrigerator, and slide the flat washer off the top of the freezer door hinge hole. Open the freezer door, and lift it straight of the pin of the center hinge. Set the door out of your way.
Pull the toe grill away from the bottom of the Kenmore Elite refrigerator. Place a wood block under the bottom of the refrigerator door to support the door weight when you release it from the bottom hinge. A 2-by-4-inch block that is one foot long positioned on its side is all that you need.
Remove the screw securing the multiwire bracket to the bottom of the refrigerator door frame with a Phillips screwdriver. Grasp the sides of the wire connector below the door with your fingers, and pull straight down to disconnect it from the door.
Press the outer sleeve of the water connector below the door outward with your fingers. Pull the inlet tube away from the connector. Remove the screws securing the bottom hinge with the nut driver. Pull the bottom hinge down and away from the door and refrigerator frame. Hold the sides of the Elite refrigerator door with your hands, and remove the block from under the door. Lower the door until it disconnects from the center hinge pin, and lay it on its side.
Pull the toe grill away from the refrigerator. Disconnect the water line connection under the door with a wrench. Pull the water line connection apart once the screw is loose.
Remove the screw on the back of the top hinge cover on both doors with a nut driver. Pull the cover away from the hinge.
Unplug the wire connector on the freezer door top hinge with your fingers. Remove the screws securing the top hinge to the top of the Kenmore Elite with the nut driver, except for the center most screw.
Loosen the center most screw on the top hinge. Lift the top hinge up and turn it toward the edge of the refrigerator. Open the door enough that you are able to grab both sides with your hands.
Lift the door straight up, and set it out of the way. Repeat the process for the refrigerator door. There are no wire connectors on the refrigerator door side.
Bottom Mount With French Doors
Open the left side door, and remove the screw securing the top hinge cover with a Phillips screwdriver. Insert a flat-head screwdriver into the slot tabs on the side of the cover, and pry the cover loose. Pull the wire harness out of the side of the cover with your fingers, and remove the cover completely.
Disconnect the three wire harnesses on the top of the hinge plate with your fingers. Remove the green ground screw on the right side of the hinge with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the ring on the water line connector outward with your fingers, and disconnect the water line.
Push the hinge lock lever on the back of the top hinge plate counterclockwise with your fingers, and remove it from the hinge plate. Lift the top hinge away from the locking lever latch and off the refrigerator. Lift the door straight up and away from the unit.
Repeat the process for the right side door. There is no water line on the right side and only two wire harnesses instead of three.
