There are many types of curtain rods, but whichever one you choose, they're often more functional than fashionable. Hometalk solves this problem with a simple wood plank curtain hook DIY. It's a great way to reuse old boards while also adding a rustic flair you don't get with regular curtain rods. Just stain a wood plank, add multiple hooks, and mount it to the wall for your curtains to hang from.

This project is great for homeowners who like to add personal touches to their home. It's beginner-friendly, but it may not be ideal for renters because it involves drilling holes into the walls. If you already have basic tools, scrap wood, and wood stain that fits your decor, this DIY can be relatively inexpensive. You'll only have to buy closet hooks like the Zbdpovt Black Coat Hooks, curtain clips such as the Amzseven Metal Curtain Rings, some keyhole hangers, and screws.

Any wood plank you have lying around can be used, as long as it's long enough to cover the width of the window. But for the best fit, consider a 1-by-4 or 1-by-6-inch plank with an extra 4 to 6 inches on each side to allow room for mounting. Necessary tools for this project include a drill with bits the same size as the screws, a tape measure, a level, a paintbrush or an old rag to apply the stain, and 180-grit sandpaper. Optionally, you can also use 120-grit sandpaper to flatten the back of the board so it sits flush against the wall.

How to turn a wood plank into a rustic curtain holder

Start by measuring your wood plank and window to ensure they are the right size for each other. You can then clean the wood to remove dirt and debris (if it's an old piece) and sand it. Once it's smooth and dry, apply your stain. Bonus points if you use a waterproof stain or topical sealant, which will give the wood added protection and durability. You can also make the wood look weathered and reclaimed for an even more rustic effect. Or, simply paint it to complement the colors of the room.

After the plank has dried, the next step is to attach the keyhole hangers to the back of the board. Alternatively, you can use wall anchors. If you choose this option, drill holes about 2 inches from each end in the center of the board for the anchor screws. Measure and mark the wall where the keyhole hangers or anchors will go, and then drill and insert the anchors, if using. Now, you can attach your hooks to the board and hang it on the wall above your window. Don't forget to use your level to make sure everything's straight.

All that's left to do is clip your curtains onto the curtain rings and hang them from the hooks. This trick makes this DIY ideal for many types of curtains, including regular fabric without curtain holes. That said, instead of using curtain clip rings, you can choose tie or tab-top curtains as the perfect partner for your rustic wood plank.
