Has your yard started to look more like a pit of dirt than an actual lawn? There are plenty of reasons grass can become patchy, but fixing it doesn't have to be overly difficult or expensive. With just a few items from Amazon and Home Depot, Khadijahudu shared a TikTok video showing a simple solution for repairing bare spots in a lawn. Her backyard hardly had any grass, but within a couple of weeks, she was able to reestablish the lawn by overseeding. All you need are a few bags of seed, some garden soil, and a couple of gardening tools to amend your grass without the help of a landscaper.

The DIYer used a combination of Barenbrug Wonderlawn Quicklawn Seed Mix ($15 for a 3-pound bag on Amazon) and Vigoro Fast Grass ($10 for 3 pounds at Home Depot). These quick-germinating mixes will help ensure that the grass sprouts fast. However, it's crucial to consider your climate and the conditions of your backyard when choosing a type of grass seed. Fall is typically the best time to overseed cool-season grasses, while spring is ideal for warm-season grasses. Other than that, Khadijahudu used a tool like a rake to prepare the ground for planting, as well as the $16 Tioncy Handheld Seed Spreader set from Amazon to distribute the seed across her yard.

Before attempting to grow new grass seed, you'll need to weed the area and rake the bare spots to break up the hard dirt. If there's some existing grass, mow it short and clean up the clippings. That way, the seeds can reach the soil when you're spreading them and germinate successfully. 

If you think the nutrients in your soil are off, this is a good time to test it and adjust the nutrient levels with fertilizer. You can also follow Khadijahudu's lead and lay down some new garden soil. In her case, she opted for the Miracle-Gro All Purpose Garden Soil from Home Depot, which costs about $5 for ¾ cubic feet. This will also give the seeds more loose ground to work into and allow you to overseed your lawn without aerating.

Now, add your seed into the Amazon spreader bottle and shake it over your lawn, making sure not to miss any spots. Pressing the seeds into the ground with the back of your rake or by walking over the lawn can help them germinate quickly. Khadijahudu recommended watering the lawn twice a day and spreading more seeds after a few days to really overseed. However, planting too many grass seeds can cause them to compete with each other and struggle to grow. As patches sprout up, add more seeds to empty patches of ground until your lawn is lush.
