However, there's an age-old designer trick that easily remedies this short — and dreaded clear — shower curtain atrocity: floor-to-ceiling decorative curtains.

By installing a tension bar close to the ceiling and adorning it with long floor-length decorative curtain panels – instead of a shorter standard shower curtain – to block the existing clear liner, the bathroom feels homier, sophisticated, and more intentional. The elegant configuration frames the shower and draws the eye up to make the space appear more grand and luxe, as well as creating added privacy with opaque or semi-translucent panels. I've used this trick in countless client projects, home stagings, and in both of my showers — I honestly refuse to go about shower curtains any other way.

While there are a couple of basic approaches to achieving this floor-to-ceiling curtain look, there are also several easy, affordable, and mostly renter-friendly upgrades to elevate the hack even further. To pick the right decorative curtains, search for machine-washable (for moisture exposure reasons) window drapery panels or extra-long shower curtains rather than standard ones. Keep in mind that many materials will shrink when initially washed (especially cotton and other natural fibers). So read fabric details and reviews from other users to assess how much the particular product will shrink and buy the next length up if necessary to get your curtain as close to the ceiling as possible. Pre-wash and shrink your panels according to the care instructions before installing so you can feel confident washing them again without surprises. If they don't shrink quite enough, hem as required.

Width-wise, measure the shower opening and choose a curtain option that will more than cover the distance. Instead of the single-panel effect of a traditional shower curtain, you can opt to use a pair of split curtains to frame the shower for a very upscale effect. Look for extra-wide panel options or even double up panels on each side if you want a fuller, more luxe look.

There are a couple of approaches for achieving this look; the easiest and most basic of which was shared by TikTok user gabriela.harrisfam, who simply installed a second tension rod near the ceiling to hang a separate tall decorative curtain slightly in front of their existing shower liner. This approach is great for anyone with a fixed shower rod already in place. For the height, use your pre-shrunk panels to determine the perfect rod height, placing it near the ceiling so that your new decorative curtains hover just above the ground for easy operation and to avoid contact with floor puddles.
