Using a king-size fitted sheet to create a queen-size fitted sheet is a good way to recycle a sheet from a bed you no longer own or from a sale find too good to pass up. With minimal sewing skills, you can cut the center of the sheet and resew, adjusting it to fit the queen mattress. Standard bed measurements from Online Furniture Depot state a king mattress measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long, and a queen mattress measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. It's a simple matter to decrease the width measurement, thus making the larger fitted sheet fit the queen mattress.
Step 1
Place the king-size fitted sheet INSIDE OUT onto the queen-size mattress and arrange the corners so they are positioned properly. The wrong side of the sheet fabric will be facing you.

Pull up the center of the sheet, folding it until the sheet lays flat and smooth as it should if it were the proper size. The center fold will measure about 16 inches.
Step 3
Using the straight pins, pin along the fold against the mattress as straight a line as you can all the way from the top edge of the fitted sheet to the bottom edge of the fitted sheet. Remove the sheet from the bed and carry it carefully to the sewing machine.
Step 4
Using a straight stitch on the sewing machine, sew as close to the pinned line as you safely can, removing the pins as the sewing progresses.
Step 5
Cut the excess fabric 1 inch away from the sewn line. Discard fabric.
Step 6
Zig zag on the sewing machine the raw edges of the new seam so that the fabric will be secured against fiber raveling. Place the fitted sheet on the bed.
