How to Replace a Fluorescent Light Socket. Replacing a fluorescent light socket is not difficult. All you need is a screwdriver, a new socket and these few tips to get the job done.

Step 1

First make sure the problem the socket needs replacing. It might be that the bulb is about to die. You can tell this if the light flickers or the tube has turned grey or black at its ends. You also should clean the socket and see if that works before replacing it. Replace the socket only if it is visibly damaged or cracked.

Step 2

Turn off the power to the fluorescent light. This is very important when working with electricity.

Step 3

Take out the bulbs from the fixture. Next, remove the cover of the fluorescent light. Depending on the model, you will have to remove at least two screws.

Step 4

Remove the socket so you can examine the wiring. There should be several wires. Wrap a different colored tap on each wire or label them so you can tell where each one belongs. You also can disconnect a wire from the old socket and hook it to the new socket. Your wires should be cut to about 1/2 inch.

Step 5

Put the wires from the light into the new socket's terminal slots. After you put the wires in, you will not be able to get them out again.
