Drill bits are small pieces of metal that attach to the end of drills. Drill bits come in various lengths and sizes to accommodate the different sizes of nails or screws. If the drill bits are not stored in cool and dry places, they are prone to rust. When moist air comes into contact with drill bits, rust starts to form. Although drill bits usually have rust-poof coatings, the coating wears away after extensive use of the drill bit. There are a few ways to get rid of the rust so the drill bits function effectively.
Step 1
Scrub off the rust. Use a scrubbing pad or old toothbrush to scrub off the surface rust on the drill bit.

Apply mineral oil. Apply mineral oil to the drill bit with a paper towel. Let the oil completely cover all the rust. Wait 20 to 30 minutes for the oil to penetrate the rust. Scrub off the rust with a scrubbing pad or old toothbrush, then wipe the drill bit clean with a paper towel. Dry thoroughly before using the drill bit.
Step 3
Soak the drill bits in white vinegar. Pour white vinegar into a bowl. Submerge the rusted drill bits. Leave the bits in the vinegar for 30 minutes. Use a scrubbing pad to scrub off the rust. Wipe the drill bits clean with a paper towel and dry completely. Vinegar has acetic acid that helps remove rust.
