Many LG washing machines have a built in safety feature that forces the door to automatically lock. The safety lock is designed to prevent people from opening the door when the water level or interior temperature inside the drum is too high. This prevents burns. If the washing machine malfunctions or you need to stop the cycle and retrieve the clothing, you can force the door to unlock.

Step 1

Open the door after the "Door Lock" indicator turns off. This indicator will not turn off until after the wash cycle is complete. If the LG washing machine is not in the middle of a wash cycle or the cycle has stopped due to malfunction, follow the next steps.

Press the "On/Off" button, if the washer is not already on.

Step 3

Select the "Spin Speed" button to turn on the Drain & Speed cycle. Don't select a spin speed to force the washer to drain.

Step 4

Press the "Start/Pause" button and the LG washing machine will begin to drain. After the water has drained, the door unlocks.
