Always disconnect the electrical cord from the outlet before attempting to remove the lid from the Whirlpool washer.
Opening and removing the top of the Whirlpool washing machine is different from opening most washing appliances. Generally clips are near the front of the machine, allowing you to pry up on the top of the unit with a flat blade to detach the lid. On a Whirlpool unit, the clips are located near the back and require you to lift the lid from the back toward the front. You can open the top of the washing machine in less than 15 minutes to access the interior workings of the appliance.
Unplug the Whirlpool washing machine from the electrical outlet, and move the cabinet away from the wall so you have room to work, shutting off the water supply lines in the back.
Locate the end caps of the washing machine on the back instrument panel, and pull the caps off by hand, being careful not to break the plastic clips.
Find the screws on the ends of the instrument panel, and unfasten them with a screwdriver, setting the screws aside in a safe place.
Flip the instrument panel backwards to expose the retaining braces for the cabinet that are underneath the panel.
Unfasten the braces with a screwdriver, and lift the lid of the Whirlpool washing machine up from the back toward the front.
Locate the switch on the inside of the washer lid, and press the switch to release the lid from the washer base, pulling the lid off the machine.
