Find the status of the water filter by selecting Water Filter on the Settings screen of the LCD. The filter status will be either Good, Order or Replace. The Order status warns you the filter is nearing the end of its useful life. When Replace is showing, you need to put a new cartridge in the refrigerator and perform a GE fridge water filter reset to clear the Replace indicator.

Replacing the Filter

The water filter cartridge is located in the upper, rear right corner of the refrigerator section of a GE Profile mode. The old cartridge is removed by turning the cartridge approximately one-half turn to the left. The cartridge can be removed without turning off the water, but a small amount of water may spill out when the filter is removed.

Install the replacement filter cartridge by lifting it into place and turning to the right. The turning action will pull the cartridge up into the proper position. Do not force the filter by pushing upward.

GE Profile Filter Reset

The water filter warning light or message is reset by pressing the Ice & Water pad on the control panel for three seconds. The filter light should turn green, and the filter status will show Good. After resetting the light, run the water dispenser for three minutes to clear any air and contaminants from the water system. The water dispenser may sputter initially, then the water should run smoothly.

Replacing a Filter

A GE Profile refrigerator uses GE SmartWater model MWF filters. The filters can be found at retail appliance stores, through online retailers or directly from the GE Appliances website. If you do not want to use a water filter in the refrigerator, the filter can be replaced by the filter bypass plug that came with the refrigerator. The icemaker will not function unless a filter or the bypass plug is installed.

Caution and Considerations

Be sure to remove the protective foil that's sealed around the end of the filter cartridge before installing it.

As you're removing an old filter cartridge, it may be ejected if air has become trapped in the water system, so be careful when removing the cartridge.

After installing a new filter cartridge, clear the system by allowing water to run from the dispenser for approximately three minutes, which will dispense about 1.5 gallons. When you begin dispensing water, it may spurt from the dispenser until it flows freely again.
