Stagnant food in your kitchen drain can cause a foul smell that soon fills up the entire room. However, there are easy ways to remedy the situation. First, if you have dishes in your sink, clean and get them out of the way, because you will need access to your drain. Then, using common household products, you can fix your smelly kitchen sink drain.
Turn on your garbage disposal while running water down the drain. It's possible the odor is being caused by food particles that didn't wash away after you last ran the disposal. Turn the disposal off, but leave your water running for at least another 30 seconds.
Fill your sink with hot water and mix in 1/8 cup of dishwashing liquid. Release the stopper and allow the water to flow through the drain to clean out the pipes and remove any grease.
Pour baking soda and a half cup of vinegar down the drain. Wait one hour and run cold water down the drain.
Freeze an ice tray with half water and half white vinegar. Run cold water down the drain, add ice cubes and turn on your garbage disposal. The vinegar deodorizes while the ice sharpens the garbage disposal blades.
Peel your favorite citrus fruit and put the peels down your garbage disposal. Turn on your garbage disposal to release the citrus odor.
Turn on the water, plug the drain and allow the sink to fill with water. Add a small amount of bleach. While wearing rubber gloves, mix the water and bleach together. Pull the plug on the drain, and the bleach mixture will clean and deodorize your drain on its way out.
