MDF stands for Medium Density Fiberboard. MDF is manufactured in sheets made from wood fibers glued under pressure. MDFs commonly are used in the manufacturing of furniture, but you can use this material for various home improvement projects that require flat wood boards. To calculate the weight, you need to know only the sheet dimensions and density.

Step 1

Find out dimensions of a MDF sheet from the material specifications, or measure them directly. Typical sheet dimensions are 4' x 8' or 5' x 8'; the sheet thickness ranges from 1/2 inch to 1 inch.

Step 2

Multiply the sheet length and width to compute the sheet surface area. If the sheet size is 4' x 8', then the area will be 4 x 8, or 32 square feet.

Step 3

Multiply the sheet thickness by 0.0833 to convert it to feet. For example, if the thickness is 1/2 inch, it will correspond to 0.5 x 0.0833, or 0.0416 feet.

Step 4

Multiply the sheet area and thickness to calculate the sheet volume. In this example, the volume is 32 square feet x 0.0416 feet, or 1.3312 cubic feet.

Step 5

Multiply the sheet volume by 0.0283 to convert it to cubic meters. In this example, the volume is 1.3312 cubic feet x 0.0283, or 0.0377 cubic meters.

Step 6

Find out the density of MDF sheets from the material specification; the density of MDF ranges from 680 to 830 kg/cubic meters. For this example, the density is 700 kg/cubic meters.

Step 7

Multiply the volume of the MDF sheet by its density to calculate the sheet weight. In this example, the sheet weight is 0.0377 cubic meters x 700 kg/cubic meters, or 26.39 kg.

Step 8

Multiply the weight (in kg) of the sheet by 2.205 to convert the weight to pounds. In the example, it is 26.39 kg x 2.205, or 58.19 pounds.
