On the color front, the company asked participants which colors they would consider decorating with and a whopping 79% said neutrals still rule the day. Not surprising, given that this color family is both calming and versatile and truly shines when a pop of color is added. Blue — another versatile hue — was first runner-up.
"We need to calm down: 2019 has been one heck of a year. From politics, to climate change, to rising stress levels among Americans, it's enough to make your head spin," Alessandra Wood, the company's interior design expert and VP of Style, writes in the report. "So it's no wonder that we're turning away from vibrant and aggressive colors in the home and infusing our rooms with calm and soothing hues instead."
Interestingly, Pinterest named the bright and bold mustard yellow (or Gen Z yellow) as its top color trend.
What wasn't on trend for 2019? Well, customers reported feeling minimal affection for neons, pastels, oranges, and yellows. They better come around fast, though; Modsy reports minimalist maximalist — think minimalist design principles paired with bold colors, patterns, and textures — as a trend to watch in 2020.
