Transform a plain, boring mailbox into a more festive mail receptacle with a homemade magnetic mailbox cover. You can make your cover in any design you want, and the project will only take you an hour or less form start to finish. Consider making a different cover for each holiday and season, or make them to give as gifts to family and friends.
Measure your mailbox from the bottom of one side, over the arch and to the bottom of the other side. Measure it front to back as well.
Cut a piece of magnetic sheet with the same dimensions as the measurements you just took.
Place the magnetic cover on the mailbox and cut out a notch for the mailbox flag by cutting an arch that starts at the bottom of the cover on that side, goes straight up to one side where the flag is attached, arches over and goes straight back down on the other side of where the flag is attached.
Sketch out a design on the magnetic sheet. You may find it helpful to sketch out the design with the magnetic sheet in place on the mailbox so you know what will appear on the sides and what will cover the arched top.
Color in your design with permanent markers or acrylic paints. Let the magnetic sheet dry completely.
Paint over the top of the decorated magnetic sheet with outdoor decoupage medium using a foam brush. Let the medium dry before putting the cover on your mailbox.
