The Stihl MS310 is a medium-sized chain saw suitable for the experienced home user. A comparatively lightweight unit for its power, the saw can accommodate guide bars between 16 and 30 inches.
The Stihl MS310's single-cylinder two-stroke engine has a displacement of 3.6 cubic inches (59 cubic centimeters), with a bore diameter of 1.85 inches (47 millimeters) and a stroke length of 1.34 inches, or 34 millimeters. This generates a brake horsepower rating of 4.0, with an idle speed of 2,800 rpm and a maximum speed of 13,000 rpm.
The powerhead itself, with an empty fuel tank and no cutting attachment, weighs 13 pounds, or 5.9 kilograms. With a full tank of 1.2 pints of fuel and a 16-inch (40-centimeter) guide bar, the total operating weight would be just over 15 pounds, or 6.8 kilograms.
Chain and Bar
The Stihl MS310 uses a chain with a 3/8 inch -- 9.32-millimeter -- pitch and can accommodate a number of different guide bars. Cutting attachments recommended in the user manual include:
- Green label: Rollomatic with sprocket nose -- 16, 18 or 20 inches together with seven-tooth chain sprocket.
- Yellow Label: Rollomatic "S" with sprocket nose -- 16, 18, 20, 25 or 30 inches.
- Yellow Label: Duromatic with Stellite-tipped nose -- 16, 18, 20 or 25 inches.
Ignition and Fuel
This saw uses an all-position diaphragm carburetor with an integral fuel pump and has a fuel tank capacity of 1.2 pints, or 560 milliliters. The ignition system includes a breakerless magneto ignition and takes a Bosch WSR 6 F or NGK BPMR 7 A spark plug.
Mix fuel with two-stroke engine oil at a ratio of 50:1 to lubricate the engine during operation.
