Gabion baskets are wire mesh baskets filled with rock, and are strategically placed to form retaining walls and erosion control barriers. In addition, gabion baskets are often used for underwater applications.

According to gabion manufacturer Maccaferri Group, underwater gabion baskets are placed in channels and along erosion-prone banks. Often placed in groups or specialty configurations, the baskets minimize wave action and discourage further soil loss. At the same time, water drains easily through the mesh baskets. Gabion baskets are available with either PVC or galvanized finishes.

Step 1

Obtain project site measurements. To obtain the correct size and quantity of gabion baskets, first measure the location in which the baskets will be installed. For example, if the gabion baskets will form a retaining wall, measure the dimensions of the available space. Take into account any slope or irregular land configuration that will affect the baskets' installation.

Underwater project site measurements may be less straightforward. If you're working in shallow water, work with an assistant to measure the approximate basket installation area. Use a hand-held depth finder to measure water depth. In deeper water (e.g. near an entrance channel), carefully navigate a small boat with a standard depth finder or fish finder.

Choose the correct size gabion basket(s). Gabion baskets come in a variety of sizes to accommodate many available spaces. Calculate the number and size of gabion baskets needed to achieve the correct overall configuration of your project site.

Contact manufacturers with a good selection of gabions. Several United States manufacturers supply gabion baskets of assorted sizes and configurations. Contact manufacturers or distributors to confirm gabion basket sizes and place an order.
